Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, fear, or nervousness. It’s a normal — and beneficial — response sometimes. Anxiety increases your awareness and enables you to avoid obstacles and exercise caution.

But anxiety can also become a harmful mental health disorder. Anxiety disorders cause frequent or constant anxiety that’s often irrational or excessive, and it prevents you from functioning normally at times.

Anxiety can affect anyone, but studies show that anxiety disorders are particularly common in teenagers, affecting nearly one-third of adolescents in the last year.

What are the types of anxiety disorders?

Examples of some common anxiety disorders are:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder: excessive anxiety over everyday things
  • Social anxiety disorder: severe anxiety in social environments
  • Specific phobia: irrational and intense anxiety over a specific thing
  • Panic disorder: bouts of severe sudden anxiety, usually with physical symptoms
  • Agoraphobia: fear of being stuck or unable to escape from a place or situation

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which features intense and terrifying anxiety involving past trauma, isn’t an anxiety disorder but shares some symptoms. The main difference between PTSD and anxiety disorders is that PTSD symptoms are tied to a specific traumatic experience, while anxiety disorders are not.

How can I tell if I have an anxiety disorder?

Anxiety disorder diagnosis requires a psychiatric evaluation, which includes medical history, completing a symptom checklist, and possibly medical testing. An evaluation is in order if you have:

  • Frequent or constant anxiety
  • Irrational fears
  • Feelings of impending doom
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling on edge
  • Growing fatigued quickly
  • Trouble focusing
  • Muscle tension
  • Headaches

Your symptoms may vary, but unfortunately, with an anxiety disorder, they never really leave you in peace.

Depression is a common co-occurring condition with anxiety disorders, and the combination may make everyday life impossible until you get help.
